Queen’s Island and Blind Creek
St. Lucie manages these two coastal properties, each of which are about 400 acres in size. Queen’s Island, on the west side of the barrier island, provides a rustic setting for canoeing around small islands in the Indian River Lagoon. The county has extensively restored the land to reveal old-growth maritime hammocks with large gumbo limbos and other native trees. Wind your way through on a nature trail and three miles of impoundment levees, from which you can fish.
About 10 miles to the south, Blind Creek is a popular area for surf fishing and beach combing. An unimproved boat ramp provides access to the Indian River Lagoon. The site occupies several natural communities, from coastal dune, coastal strand, maritime hammock and tidal swamp. Future improvements include a short interpretive trail on the west side of A1A, a fishing pier into the Indian River Lagoon and an observation deck. Two and one-half miles of impoundment dikes are ideal for hiking.
